It’s official; America just reached a new
low high. 70% of the US population is now overweight (body mass index > 25) and 40% is obese (BMI > 30). In other words, 7/10 people are fat, and 4/10 people are really fat. It is extremely unwise for sloth and gluttony, two of the seven DEADLY sins, to dominate your life.
In most cases, weight gain is self-induced and entirely avoidable. It’s simple math, calories in minus energy expended. According to the National Institute of Health, obesity and overweight together are the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States close behind tobacco use. An estimated 300,000 deaths per year are due to the obesity epidemic. Forks and spoons, not guns, are the real threat facing most Americans; yet I don’t hear a clamor to ban either.
Obesity is directly associated with worse mental health outcomes, reduced quality of life, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and some types of cancer. The medical costs of obesity in the US are estimated to be $147 billion in 2008 dollars. That’s insane. You can wear all the pink ribbons you want to fund a cure for breast cancer, but it is obesity prevention would save more lives. What color should teams wear on Sunday to celebrate national obesity epidemic awareness month?
The speed at which this occurred is staggering. In 1960 only 11% of the population was obese. By 2030, that number is projected to reach 50%. That is a 40% increase in a single generation! WTH is going on? Carbohydrates and gadgets, that’s what’s going on; and it has to stop.
Folks, there are NO essential carbohydrates. None. Zero. Zip. A decent rule of thumb: if it comes pre-processed in a package, it’s garbage. Soda, chips, cookies, foo-foo mocha-choka lattes, cartoon cereal, doughnuts, and ice cream are off-limits. You should limit your carb intake to less than 100g per day and ensure that the carbs you do consume are healthy.
How you ask? Simple. Eat the same thing everyday. That’s right. Your dog does it, your cat does it, and you can do it. In the morning eat 2 scrambled eggs, a small bowl of oatmeal, and a piece of whole grain toast with natural peanut butter. 2.5 hours later have a handful of almonds and a sliced apple. For lunch, eat a turkey wrap with a slice of cheese and guacamole, a handful of natural black baked tortilla chips with salsa and some carrot sticks. Drink a protein shake before dinner and then work out. For dinner, have two turkey breasts with all the veggies you can eat. Substitute tuna for turkey, hard-boiled eggs for scrambled, lean steak and salmon for chicken, any veggies and fruit as desired, and cook with olive oil.
You are a creature of habit and they say it take 21 days to break one. I call BS. If you don’t buy it, you can’t eat it. Throw habit out the window; you are adopting a permanent lifestyle modification. You must create a routine for success, not merely break a bad habit. Once a week, allow yourself a cheat day where you enjoy a cookie, a little ice cream, or small slice of cake or pie. If you are already fit and disciplined, eat whatever you like; this is basic info for those who want to get to your level.
Bottom line: something has to change (probably your waistline.) If you gain 2 lbs per month, which is quite common, you will gain 24 lbs this year and another 24 next year. The human body has no mechanism to stop it other than death.
I understand this is a personal struggle for many. Entire industries want you to believe that fat is beautiful. It’s not. Multiple studies have shown that fit people are viewed as more intelligent, more attractive, more successful, and more likely to be hired. Articles that encourage you to “ love and accept your body unconditionally” are propaganda. The agenda is to keep you fat so you continue buying their crap. Wake up! Get off the couch, put down your gadget, go outside, start exercising, and eat ON A SCHEDULE. Your life literally depends on it.
